South Winnipeg Garden Club 2023 Season

The South Winnipeg Garden Club (SWGC) is located along the Red River adjacent to St. Amant Centre in St. Vital.  The gardens were originally started by the Grey Nuns to supply fresh vegetables to the residents at St.Amant in approximately 1931. The largest garden in Winnipeg is the SWGC at 13,000m2 or over 3.2 acres.

While the SWGC has existed for only a few years, the garden club had its beginnings as the Fort Garry Horticultural Society, taking on the present name after merging with gardeners at the St Amant location.  The garden plots are irrigated, using water from the nearby Red River, has a storage shed, water tanks and compost facilities. The motto of the club is “Grow a Little….”

Initiatives undertaken in the past few years include improving the soil, upgrading the irrigation equipment, promoting organic gardening and non-GMO plantings. We have workshops for all gardeners, encourage young gardeners and have welcomed newcomers to Canada from far away countries to garden here.

At the same time this is a community of people who have developed strong relationships with each other over the years and who meet regularly over the winter months to hear speakers present various garden related topics.
